At Tempo Tuition, safeguarding is everybody's business. This page outlines everything that we do as a company to keep our services safe for children and young people.

2. Safeguarding Policy Statement

Purpose & Scope

Tempo Tuition is committed to the safety and protection of children and young people during their work with our tuition services. Our commitment to safeguarding is supreme and is the first and most important consideration when every decision is made within the company.

This policy applies to all children (under-18s) and students (including mature students) who work with Tempo Tuition and is a mandatory governing document for every tutor, employee, and volunteer who works with us.

We Believe

  • Children and young people should never experience abuse of any kind
  • We have a responsibility to promote the welfare of all children and young people
  • Safe practice must protect children at all times

We Recognise

  • The welfare of children is paramount in all the work we do and all decisions we take
  • Working in partnership with children, young people, parents, carers and other agencies is essential
  • All children have equal right to protection regardless of age, disability, gender identity, race, religion, belief, sex, or sexual orientation
  • Some children are additionally vulnerable and may need extra safeguards

Our Commitments

We will keep children and young people safe by:

  • 1.Valuing, listening to and respecting children and young people
  • 2.Appointing a nominated child protection lead
  • 3.Adopting child protection and safeguarding best practice in all policies
  • 4.Developing an effective online safety policy and procedures
  • 5.Providing effective management through supervision, support, training and quality assurance
  • 6.Creating a dedicated channel for tutors to raise safeguarding concerns and access advice
  • 7.Recruiting and selecting tutors and staff safely with all necessary checks
  • 8.Recording, storing and using information professionally and securely
  • 9.Sharing safeguarding information with children, families and stakeholders
  • 10.Sharing concerns and information with agencies who need to know appropriately
  • 11.Managing allegations against tutors and staff appropriately
  • 12.Providing a safe physical environment in accordance with health & safety law
  • 13.Building a safeguarding culture of mutual respect and trust

The DSO is trained to respond to initial concerns and disclosures and manages all safeguarding reports.

DSO Responsibilities

  • Provide ready and accessible support to staff, tutors and stakeholders
  • Manage all safeguarding reports and liaison with statutory services
  • Report allegations to Local Authority and DBS as appropriate
  • Maintain secure records of all safeguarding concerns
  • Provide quality assurance and review functions
  • Ensure adoption and auditing of safeguarding policies

Shared Responsibility

All tutors and staff at Tempo Tuition have a shared responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people. They must:

  • Know how to recognise safeguarding concerns
  • Know how to respond appropriately to concerns
  • Report concerns immediately as per these procedures
  • Maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries

5. Online Safety

Tempo Tuition takes a holistic approach to online safety that aims to protect tutors and students in their use of technology.

Communication Standards

All communication between tutors and students must be:

  • 1.Conducted via parents or guardians only, if the student is under 18 years of age.
  • 2.Professional in tone and content at all times

Four Areas of Online Safety

As per KCSIE 2024, we recognise four broad categories of online safety risk:

📱 Content

Exposure to illegal, inappropriate or harmful content including pornography, fake news, racism, self-harm, and extremism.

💬 Contact

Harmful online interaction including peer pressure, grooming attempts, and exploitation by adults.

⚠️ Conduct

Personal online behaviour that causes harm including explicit images, online bullying, and harassment.

💳 Commerce

Financial risks including online gambling, scams, phishing, and inappropriate advertising.

Safety Measures

  • Regular quality assurance reviews to identify and escalate concerns
  • Personal details and social media information remain private and confidential
  • Online safety is integrated into all policies and procedures

6. Safer Recruitment

Under the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006, Tempo Tuition carries out vetting on all tutors who work with children and young people.

Recruitment Process

We have a rigorous recruitment process that incorporates:

1. Live Interview

All tutors must pass a set of experience and standards requirements to sign up

2. ID Verification

Proof of identification required and verified

3. DBS Check

Valid Criminal Background Check including Children's Barred List Information

5. Reference Checks

From previous employment, academic sources, or professionals known for 6+ months

6. Quality Assurance

Periodic lesson observations and quality checks as ongoing safeguarding controls

⚠️ Important

The Designated Safeguarding Officer has the right to immediately terminate a tutor's access to services in the interest of safety. This will be immediately communicated and reported as per safeguarding procedures.

7. Training & Development

We believe that training and raising awareness of safeguarding issues is fundamental to maintaining a safer environment and organisation.

Mandatory Training

All tutors and staff are encouraged to complete appropriate safeguarding training to:

  • Prevent child abuse and exploitation
  • Recognise signs and symptoms of abuse
  • Record safeguarding concerns accurately
  • Respond appropriately to allegations of abuse
  • Know reporting procedures and when to escalate
  • Understand information sharing protocols

Important: Safeguarding training is not a "once only" activity. It is an ongoing development of skills and knowledge, with refresher training provided as part of our commitment to continuous improvement.

8. Disclosure & Reporting Procedures

🚨 Emergency Situations

If you witness immediate risk to a child or serious abuse, contact the police immediately on 999 or your local safeguarding services. Do not delay reporting to Tempo Tuition.

Different types of concerning behaviour warrant different responses. This section outlines the procedures to follow for each scenario.

For Tutors

Inappropriate Language

  1. Politely request the student refrain from inappropriate language
  2. If language continues, explain you will terminate the session
  3. Report to the Designated Safeguarding Officer
  4. The DSO will determine any further action regarding service use
  5. Report any unsolicited contact after termination to Tempo Tuition immediately

Inappropriate Behaviour

  1. Politely request the student refrain from the behaviour
  2. If behaviour continues, explain you will terminate the session
  3. Report to the Designated Safeguarding Officer immediately
  4. Have no further contact unless authorised by Tempo Tuition
  5. Report any unsolicited contact after termination to Tempo Tuition immediately

Adult Pornographic Images

  1. Explain that such images should not be displayed during lessons
  2. Terminate the session immediately
  3. Report to the Designated Safeguarding Officer
  4. The DSO will inform statutory authorities as appropriate

Child Abuse Images / Indecent Images of Children

This is a serious criminal offence. Take immediate action:

  1. Terminate the session immediately
  2. Contact the UK police on 999 immediately
  3. Have no further contact with the student or person involved
  4. Report any unsolicited contact to the police and Tempo Tuition immediately

Disclosure of Abuse

Physical or sexual abuse is a serious criminal offence.

  1. Reassure the person they can get help
  2. If disclosed: contact the police and report what you've heard
  3. If witnessed: immediately contact the police
  4. Have no further contact unless authorised
  5. Report any unsolicited contact to the police and Tempo Tuition immediately

Sensitive Information Disclosure

  1. If the information relates to abuse, refer to the abuse procedures above
  2. Discourage further disclosure of sensitive information
  3. Determine impact and decide whether to continue or terminate session
  4. Report to the Designated Safeguarding Officer
  5. If it relates to child safety, report immediately to the police

For Students

If you experience concerning behaviour from a tutor, follow these procedures:

General Inappropriate Behaviour or Language

  • • Inform your parent/responsible adult immediately
  • • Your parent/responsible adult should ask the tutor to stop the behaviour
  • • If it continues, they should terminate the session
  • • Report to Tempo Tuition for investigation

Sexual Behaviour from a Tutor

  • • Inform your parent/responsible adult immediately
  • • Terminate the session immediately
  • • Your parent/responsible adult should contact the police immediately
  • • Inform Tempo Tuition

Pornographic or Abuse Images

  • • Terminate the session immediately
  • • Inform your parent/responsible adult immediately
  • • Your parent/responsible adult should contact the police immediately
  • • Also inform Tempo Tuition

Disclosure of Abuse from a Tutor

  • • Inform your parent/responsible adult immediately
  • • Your parent/responsible adult should contact the police immediately
  • • Also inform Tempo Tuition

For Parents/Responsible Adults

As a parent or responsible adult, you have primary responsibility for your child's welfare during lessons and should be present or available to respond to concerns.

Your Responsibilities

  • 1.Be present or immediately available during lessons
  • 2.Address inappropriate behaviour directly with the tutor first if safe to do so
  • 3.Terminate the session if behaviour continues
  • 4.Report to Tempo Tuition immediately
  • 6.Have no further contact with the tutor involved
  • 7.Report unsolicited contact from the tutor to Tempo Tuition and police if appropriate

Important:

Any tutor reported will be suspended until the incident has been investigated. You will be informed of the outcome if appropriate.

9. Whistleblowing

Tutors and staff should feel able to raise concerns about poor or unsafe practice without fear of retaliation.

Internal Reporting
